“Access” at York encompasses a range of meanings and initiatives to foster success -- from pathways and programs to welcome and support students from non-traditional backgrounds to the elimination of physical and structural barriers to university study to the offering of courses and programs at a variety of times in classroom settings or online in response to students’ needs. Highlighted below are just a few examples of York’s access initiatives.
Programs and Services:
York offers a variety of access and bridging programs as pathways to post-secondary education. Some examples of programs include: bridging programs for internationally educated professionals, college transfer initiatives, women’s bridging programs, and programs for non-traditional and disadvantaged students. Glendon College is the only university in Toronto where it is possible to complete your studies in French giving another dimension of access at York.
York’s service units provide a range of support services that enrich the student experience. The following are some examples of specially designed resource units and transition programs.
The Atkinson Centre for Mature and Part-Time Students (ACMAPS) is a resource for mature and part-time students from recruitment through to graduation. ACMAPS supports students in their transition to university studies and helps them navigate their York experience. The Centre provides a place where mature and part-time students, undergraduate and graduate, can meet to share their interests and experiences.
The Counselling & Disability Services provides a range of services, including personal counselling, group development workshops, learning skills training, support and academic accommodation for students with learning, mental health, physical, sensory and medical disabilities.
The Centre for Aboriginal Student Services provides support services to enrich Aboriginal student life and promote Aboriginal education and awareness.
The Transition Year Program (TYP) at York University is a special access program for youth (19+) and adults who are passionate about attending university. TYP@York provides an opportunity to transition to university for those that have previously experienced social and financial barriers to accessing the formal education system.
